Powai - 07 February 10 : Bariatric surgery, or weight loss surgery, is a type of procedure performed on people who are extremely obese, for the purpose of losing weight. The minimal invasive method to cut flab medically is making this popular worldwide.

This weight loss is usually achieved by reducing the size of the stomach with an implanted medical device (gastric banding) or through removal of a portion of the stomach or by resecting and re-routing the small intestines to a small stomach pouch (gastric bypass surgery).

Long-term studies show the procedures cause significant long-term loss of weight, recovery from diabetes, improvement in cardiovascular risk factors, and a reduction in mortality of 23% to 40%.

Now, this facility is available at the Hiranandani Hospital in Powai. The world renowned, highly skilled most experienced surgeon team in India, of Dr Shashank Shah and Dr Jayashree Todkar have been roped as regular consultants here to provide this path-breaking surgical medical facility in the city.

Several of my female patients have tried various weight loss programmes that have not worked. Women are subconsciously pressurised by family members to lose weight, but they are not receiving the support that is required to take on such a challenge. This often leads to depression, which spurs eating disorders.”

Dr. Shashank Shah is a pioneer laparoscopic Bariatric surgeon from India. He is presently serving as a secretary of Obesity Surgery Society of India (OSSI). He is also the director and founder of Laparo-Obeso Center and director of Department Of Laparoscopic And Bariatric Surgery at the Hiranandani Hospital, Powai.

Assuring people on this medically advanced technique Dr Shah says, “Minimally invasive surgery when compared to open surgery involves less stitches, less pain, less scaring, less hospital stay and early recovery hence economical on health care costs.”
