RV Coffee Time - Suicide, who is responsible?

By Citizen Reporter

Powai - 07 February 10 : The RV Coffee Time group met on 1st February 2010 at its usual venue, Evening Glory Raheja Vihar. The subject of discussion raised quite a few eyebrows. But none could deny the relevance of this subject now.

For the last few months and till date, media has been reporting instances of suicides. Suicides amongst adults, teenagers, young brides have been making news now and then. But the rise of suicides amongst children is alarming! Suicide is a global public problem.

Efforts to address the problem have been unsystematic but there is increasing recognition by governments, community members and professional groups of the need to do more. But the question that arises is who takes the ownership of these happenings. Fingers point out to parents, teachers or school policies that drive some of the students to take such drastic steps.

As all ailments show symptoms so do the suicidal tendencies. We generally miss out on the signs and symptoms of depression and fail to address the same. Depression and stress need as much clinical attention as any other illness. Members put forward their views on the sudden rise of suicides in the city and around.

Chaddha said sometimes people cannot cope up with problems and work related pressures. He felt that when such people need help it is our moral duty to help them. Sankaranarayanan opined that parents need to sacrifice and devote time for their children School programme should include 'Yoga' and moral stories. He felt that media could also be held responsible for highlighting the suicidal issues. PG said arrest frustrations at its root and parents should stop being demanding. Accept the child as he or she is.

Ms Grisma, Ms.Aarti and Ms. Rukhmni Rao felt that love creates confidence in children. Parents need to play a bigger role in assuring the feeling of happiness and contentment. Teach children to wait…wait ..for whatever be their demand. Let us teach our children to be tolerant and accept situations whether success or failure with a positive attitude. Let us spread a word that life is beautiful and let us enjoy it. Just like high tides ebb, tall issues also subside without leaving any impressions. The group dispersed after sipping a cup of hot coffee…..
