The first fortnight of the New Year (Jan 1 – 15) is marked as something very special and important - The National Road Safety Fortnight. This also coincides with the Road Safety Week in the Rotary world when moving on the exciting journey of Rotary service Rotarians work to create awareness and spread the message of road safety.

With increase in number of vehicles by the day and the inadequate infrastructure has led to increase in automobile accidents. The large number of accidents can be attributed to Careless, Drunken & Reckless driving. It is a known fat that driving without seatbelts, helmets and using mobile phones while driving has led to several losses of lives.

In order to create awareness about safe and sensible driving, the Rotary Club of Bombay Powai decided to spread the message of road safety through the youths of tomorrow for school students who will be in the driver’s seat of a vehicle in a couple of years.

The VIII th standard students of Hiranandani Foundation and Gopal Sharma Schools took to the streets on Tuesday (17th Jan) morning, accompanied by their class teachers. They marched along the busy roads of the Hiranandani Garden and Powai Vihar carrying banners, posters and placards with different messages on road safety & safe driving which they had made themselves. The children even addressed passing motorists reminding them to wear seatbelt / helmet, to put their cells off while driving, not to speed, practicing traffic rules and so on. They were shouting slogans like …. ‘Save Yourself From Hell, Wear Helmet’, ‘and A Missed Call Can Save Your Life ’ and‘ Speed Thrills & Also Kills’. The enthusiasm of the kids in doing something outside their routine classroom exercises and also which had a huge social significance was very tangible.

Rotary Club of Bombay Powai is grateful to the 2 afore mentioned schools for granting permission and encouraging their children to be a part of this activity for creating awareness & spreading the message of safe driving. The rally also had some take home message for the kids as the future drivers and also for their parents.

Rotary Club of Bombay Powai sincerely thanks the Powai Police Station and the Hiranandani Group’s Commando team for being there along the entire route of the march controlling the vehicular traffic and also helping to control the enthusiastic bunch of approx. 200 plus kids .
