My Heart Cries over Powai Lake

Dear Editor,
I am a resident of Raheja Vihar for last 12 years and have been breathing fresh air and enjoying the beauty of the Powai Lake. I used to stay at Jogeshwari prior to this. We use to come to Mulund once in a fortnight even that time as a child I used to wait for the moment our car to reach the range of Powai Lake and use to admire its enthralling beauty.
But recent developments at Powai Lake have upset me. The reason being there will be more crowd pulled to the lake and the dust/garbage is going to increase and spoil the lake's flora and fauna.
Even today's (15/08/09) PP carrying photograph of the Powai lake shows moss/mud in the mid of the one forth corner of the lake. Moreover the exercise of beautification of the lake is an eye wash. It is heading for land grab by the builders lobby/and the bureaucrats behind them.
But the sorry state of affairs is that no one is visualizing the damage it is going to do to all of us including, those who are land grabbing. This year itself the monsoon has not been upto the mark. The BMC has already announced 15 to 20% water cut, which will further increase if the rain god shies away from us.
During such scarcity these reserved lakes will / may supplement us with the water. Builders are building skyscrapers and earning profit in crores but let them imagine once that if they build skyscrapers and provide all amenities best in the world but no water in the buildings will any one take these flats even free of cost. The government should bring ACT to stop any construction activities in certain zones/areas which are bound to damage our nature, requirements and surroundings.
So, it is high time that we act now rather than reacting which has been our way for anything and everything. A uniform appeal must be made to the authorities concerned and people in the surroundings.

A deeply concerned nature lover
